 What to See?

Bago

Bago is situated 80 km east of Yangon. It was once a seaport and capital of Mon kingdom, founded in 825 by two Mon brothers. According to the legend, it was just a small peace of island around 563 BC where the two birds perched, the female bird on the back of the male one. It became today the symbol of this city.

The small city is really bustling with the bicycle, tri-shawl, motorcycle, three-wheel motorcycle and horse-cart. And the different religious monuments are remarkable beside the main road such as, mosque, Hindu temple, Chinese temple, monastery and temple.

One can make a day return trip from Yangon or visit on the way to Golden Rock pagoda. It takes 1 hours to get there.

What to see?

Kyeik-maw-taw
The original small stupa is said to be built in 367 BC and the hair relic as Buddha was enshrined in it. The original Mon name is Kyeik-mu-tar; means “Pagoda positioned on the edge”. It is 114 m high, about 14 higher than the Shwe-da-gon pagoda in Yangon. The pagoda was suffered by earthquake for several times and it was renovated in 1954 as the last time.

Kan-baw-za-thar-di palace
It was newly built in 1996 with its original style. It is magnificent on its 1.8 sq km area. The original golden palace was completely destroyed in 16 century.
Hin-thar-kone Paya: The historical place of Bago, once it was a very tiny island. It offers very nice view of the region and one can run into the Nat (spirit) festival there to enjoy by chance.

Shwe-thar-lyaung Buddha
A huge reclining Buddha near the newly built one in the open air. It was originally built in 994.

Kyeik Pun pagoda
Built in 1476 by Mon king. Kyeik-Pun means “four- Buddha Pagoda” in Mon language. Four huge seated Buddha are placed back to back as a base of the small pagoda topped which is no more as it damaged.
