Kyaik-Hti-Yoe or Golden Rock Pagoda

How to reach there?

It is one of the most interesting and sacred Pagoda in Myanmar, located on the 1100 m high mountain range, 161 km from Yangon.

A small stupa is built on the gilded boulder 25 m in circumstance which is placed on the very edge of the rock cliff in a very precarious position. According to the legend, the hair relief of the Buddha was enshrined in it. Some believe that the pagoda maintains its balance for years due to the hair relief.

It is one of the famous destination sites, known as Golden Rock Pagoda among the tourists. The pagoda is covered for years in the jungle and the mayor of Kyeik-hto discovered it in 1824 while he was searching for his lost elephant. Later the pagoda become well known and one of the venerated one for Buddhists in Asia.

The pagoda festival is held on 25 Dec and the whole month is too crowded with local pilgrims. Admission fee: US$ 6

How to reach there?

It takes about 5 hours drive from Yangon to arrive at the base station, from where you have to take the public open truck for about 45 minutes up to the second station. Then climb up to the top about 45 minutes or an hour. The private cars are not aloud to drive up from the base station because of the traffic and unusual road.

There are interesting places to make a pause or to visit on the way to Golden Rock. One can visit the Htauk-kyant war cemetery which houses to the 27 000 tomb of British soldiers after 45 minutes drive from Yangon. And visit the Pottery at the entrance of Bago. It is something interesting to learn how useful the pot in Myanmar is. The workers at the pottery are usually quite poor.

The road is sometimes very bumpy after passing Bago but the landscape is beautiful and interesting through the villages. You pass by the rice field in the plain and once you arrive in Mon division, after crossing the Sit-taung Bridge, built by British, the landscape change into hilly region and you will see so many different trees, plantations such as rubber, betel, cashew, grapefruit, sugarcane, etc.

The best place to make a pause is Sein-lè-tin Restaurant with big garden and small zoo. You are at the base station of golden Rock pagoda after 50 minutes from there.

On the way back, you can visit Kyeik-hto market or Thein-phyu-za-yet market, one of the rubber plantation and Bago where you can have a lunch and make sightseeing. Admission fee: US$ 10
